Jan, 22, 1956 - A Shoe Shiner and Mr. Li Qau Ren

The evening service started with only ten people attending among which was a young man wearing thick glasses sitting in the front row. I gauged that he was about 20 years old . After the service, most people had already left, but this young person was holding onto a paperback book lingering in the room. I was in the middle of talking to a Sister and he asked, with a light voice, do you want your shoes shined? And I didn't know how to answer him, so I pretended that I didn't hear him. And my heart was troubled because I realized he was probably a person in need. And I continued to talk to the Sister as this young man politely waited. And I had compassion, so I stopped my conversation and approached him and asked if he had any questions or what he wanted to do. He gently told me his story which was quite pitiful. He makes a living by shining shoes and lives on the street. And it's almost 10:00 and he's still trying to get some work. As he was telling me about his life story, it was filled with testimony of how he lived depending on Jesus. Even though I myself am pretty poor without a lot of money, I wanted to help him. I didn't know what to say to comfort him. And then Mr. Li Qau Ren came down from the 3rd floor. By then, everyone else had left. This young person in need turned to Mr. Li and asked him if he wanted his shoe shined. He sat down and was happily shining his shoe. And again, he asked if I wanted my shoes shined. Oh Lord, have pity on my weakness, I was going to tell Mr. Li that we shouldn't ask him to shine our shoes in our sanctuary. If we had money we can give him some because Jesus is love, and this is his sanctuary.
