How should overseas Chinese educate their children?
This is an important one! Many people leave their hometown and soon forget everything about their past. This is especially true of overseas Chinese. Today, Mr. Huang Jiang introduced us to an English gentleman. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about with overseas Chinese children: a woman whose parents are from Shantou was born and grew up in America. It was not until the ‘30’s that she returned to Hong Kong. She is 60 years old this year and can only speak a few words of Cantonese. She can’t read Chinese at all. You imagine that overseas Chinese will “stay Chinese” forever. How could you forget everything about your country? When many of the northerners arrive in Hong Kong today, their children will never speak their hometown dialect. I’m not stubborn and conservative but I think everyone should have the idea of home. Because our culture has now been passed down to people all over the world, it’s important that we don’t forget where we come from.
I often see the concept of foreigners in the countryside but also in other small countries like Norway, Denmark, Finland, etc. Whenever and wherever they go, they first instill in their children the culture of their home country and then get an outside education. This is something overseas Chinese should pay special attention to.
